Dr Shirley completed her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at Murdoch University (Perth, Australia) after graduating from University of Hawaii at Manoa (Hawaii, USA). She holds the Doctor of Psychology* degree and has been practicing clinical psychology for more than 20 years.

Dr Shirley’s interest is in enabling young people to mature into individuals who lead emotionally enriched and meaningful lives, and who have lifelong skills to stay strong in the face of adversities. Having worked with adolescents, young adults and those significant to them for many years, she believes that developing secure attachment is a key foundation that helps individuals become healthy and emotionally resilient adults. Dr Shirley also has a keen interest in working with individuals who have had traumatic experiences. She is trained in various treatment modalities that helps treat individuals with developmental, attachment and complex trauma, so that they expand their capacity to live more effectively.

Dr Shirley started her career at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital as the pioneer psychologist and she was responsible for setting up the Psychological Services for both women and children. She conducted psychological assessment and intervention for children with developmental disorders and medical conditions. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, she also supported and journeyed with women diagnosed with gynaecological cancers.

As the principal counsellor of PSB Academy, a private educational institution with an international student community, she established the Counselling Service and saw many young people through their struggles with studies, families, relationship, life stressors and various psychological issues so that they could graduate successfully. She also assisted students with special needs who required specialised support with their studies and who needed help with social integration into the student community. These services were similar to those she provided at the University Counselling Service at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, where she provided psychotherapy for adults with multi-cultural background, and who were facing issues such as cross-cultural adjustments, difficult relationships, pregnancies, grief, stress, anxiety and depression.  Dr Shirley’s range of experiences had given her an understanding of individuals from diverse background and who have had to cope with their adversity and stress in culturally appropriate approaches.

In her current private practice, Dr Shirley focuses mainly on:

Her desire is to support individuals to understand and overcome what might be hindering them and attend to what they might have missed earlier in their lives, so that every client can live victoriosly in their own rights.
